The Drug Information Club organized a debate competition on the topic “Benefits and Risks of New Drugs” on 28th February 2026 for D.Pharm second-year students. The objective of this activity was to enhance students' knowledge about newly introduced drugs, promote critical thinking, and encourage evidence-based discussion regarding their therapeutic advantages and potential risks.
The team discussing the benefits highlighted that new drugs provide improved efficacy, better safety profiles, reduced side effects, enhanced patient compliance, novel mechanisms of action, and better treatment options for previously untreatable diseases. They also emphasized advancements in biotechnology, targeted therapy, and personalized medicine as major contributions of newly developed drugs.
The opposing team discussed the risks associated with new drugs, including limited long-term safety data, unexpected adverse drug reactions, high cost, drug interactions, post-marketing withdrawal, and insufficient clinical experience. They stressed the importance of pharmacovigilance, post-marketing surveillance, and rational use of newly approved medications.
The debate was interactive and informative, with participants actively engaging in rebuttals and question-and-answer sessions. Judges evaluated students based on content, clarity, confidence, scientific accuracy, and presentation skills. The competition concluded with feedback from the judges, who appreciated the students' efforts and emphasized the importance of balanced evaluation of new drugs in pharmacy practice.
The activity successfully improved students' understanding of drug information resources, critical analysis of new drug approvals, and rational decision-making in patient care. The program ended with the announcement of winners and a vote of thanks.
