On the occasion of World Hepatitis Day, it was a great honor for the Department of Microbiology to host a continued medical education (CME) programme. It was held on July 29th 2023 at lecture hall I, Academic block at SMCH, Trichy.
Dr. A. Thulasi, Dean of SMCH delivered presidential address by introducing theme of World Hepatitis Day 2023 - "We’re not waiting for change - we are fighting to make it happen" and also emphasized the importance of vaccination against Hepatitis B among Health care workers. Thus the scientific session was started by the Resource Speakers.
Dr. S. Pradeepa, Associate Professor of Social and Preventive Medicine, SMCH accentuated the global epidemiology of all hepatotrophic viruses and also she mentioned Hepatitis B is globally one of the most common and sessions infectious diseases leading to significant morbidity and mortality. The session made all the participants focused and attentive.
Dr. M.Praveen, Assistant Professor of General Medicine, DSMCH. briefly discussed about different types of hepatitis and their diagnosis by using laboratory investigation. Then he presented different case scenarios and the participants actively involved in the diagnosis of each case. He also mentioned about clinical aspects of hepatitis in pregnancy. The session was very much informative and understandable to the gathering.
Dr. Radha Kumari, Professor & HOD of Microbiology, SMCH, updated the vaccines available for hepatitis B and focused on how vaccines play a crucial role in preventing hepatitis complications. She enlightened about the significance of Hepatitis B vaccination for Health care workers being at high risk categories. The session was extremely beneficial and knowledgeable.
Followed by an entertaining skit was performed. The staff nurses involved themselves in conveying the message on needle stick injury. On which they highlighted how Blood Borne Viruses are easily transmissible by NSI & also enfolded what complications would happen if they are neglected. They also mentioned about the management of needle stick injury and blood spill. It was extremely fun filled and purposeful to the audience.
