The Gender Champions’ Club of Dhanalakshmi Srinivasan University, under the guidance of the Centre for Students’ Affairs, organized a Workshop on Gender Sensitization: Creating Safe and Inclusive Spaces in Institutions on 2nd May 2025, at 6th Floor Lecture Hall, Academic Block.
The workshop aimed to raise awareness among students and staff on issues of gender sensitivity, safety, and equality, and to equip them with the knowledge and tools to foster inclusive environments within academic institutions.
The session began with the Tamil Thai Vazhthu, followed by a warm Welcome Address delivered by Prof. Dr. R. Vijayalakshmi, Students’ Affairs in-charge. Her address emphasized the significance of gender sensitization in building responsible future citizens.
The highlight of the session was the Chief Guest Address by Ms. B. N. Sinega, Advocate, Madras High Court. She shared real-world insights on gender-based discrimination, legal protection for marginalized identities, and the pressing need to make institutional spaces safe for all genders. Her speech was both legally enriching and socially stirring.
This was followed by the Gender Sensitization Workshop conducted by the Chief Guest herself. The interactive session covered:
- Understanding gender identities and expressions
- Identifying unconscious bias
- Laws and rights related to gender safety
- Building inclusive classrooms and campuses
- Student-led action and advocacy
The workshop saw active participation from over 250 students across various schools of the university, including:
- 65 students from the School of Nursing
- 55 students from the School of Law
- 50 students from the School of Agricultural Sciences
- 85 students from mixed departments (School of Pharmacy, School of Physiotherapy, School of Arts)
Students posed questions on legal protection, institutional accountability, and real-life challenges faced by different genders. The Chief Guest responded with clarity, empathy, and legal precision, making the workshop highly informative and interactive. Many students expressed that the session was practical, insightful, and empowering.
Ms. B. N. Sinega, the esteemed Chief Guest of the event, is not only a practicing Advocate at the Madras High Court but also a vocal activist, a progressive feminist, and a social thinker deeply rooted in human rights and justice. Her commitment to equality transcends legal forums—she actively participates in grassroots movements, educational campaigns, and policy discussions that center around gender justice, minority rights, and socio-political reform. Her background in leftist and progressive ideology, combined with her legal acumen, makes her voice one that is both fearless and thought-provoking.
Her address at the workshop reflected this very spirit—bold, unapologetic, and deeply aware of societal realities. She brought in narratives from her activism, connected theory with lived experience, and challenged the audience to move beyond tokenism toward real, structural inclusion. Her ability to blend legal perspectives with ideological clarity made her session not just informative, but awakening. Students were deeply engaged, resonating with her call to dismantle ingrained biases and become active contributors in building safe and equitable spaces within academic institutions and beyond.
Students actively participated in Question & Answer sessions and shared their thoughts, making the workshop dynamic and meaningful.
The event concluded with a heartfelt Vote of Thanks by Dr. R. Sathiyapriya, Nodal Teacher and Coordinator of the Gender Champions’ Club. The audience then rose for the National Anthem, marking a respectful and unified close to the session.
Overall, the workshop concluded on a highly positive and reflective note, with students and faculty expressing deep appreciation for the insights shared. The overwhelming participation, active interaction, and thoughtful questions reflected the eagerness of the student community to engage with issues of gender sensitization and inclusivity. The presence and guidance of the Chief Guest, Ms. B. N. Sinega, enriched the session and inspired many to rethink societal norms and institutional responsibilities. With many students empowered through awareness and dialogue, the event was a resounding success—fulfilling its goal of not just educating, but transforming perspectives and nurturing a more inclusive campus culture.
